What are values?
- Core beliefs about what it means to be a good person
- Intentions behind behaviour but totally adaptable to each unique situation
- No rules on how
- No results required
What do you see in people you admire?
- Identify the harder values people are not living by
- Pick 3-5 that you think need the most work
- Identify one per day to focus on until you feel that you've mastered them
Value-based decision making
- How do you choose which value to live by in a situation? Use emotions
- Emotions are both warning signals and sources of power, e.g. anxiety warns you that it's time for courage, while anger provides the power to overcome your fear
- Trigger the power you need by bringing the guilt or pride you might feel in the future to the present moment e.g. "How would future me feel if I behave this way now?"
Emotions
- Anxiety indicates need for courage
- Anger indicates need for passion
- Sadness indicates need for gratitude/compassion
- Frustration indicates need for assertiveness
Value questions
- What would it mean to live by the value of X in this situation?
- What would a confident person do in this situation?
- What do I need to do to be proud of myself tomorrow?
Measuring value-based behaviour
- Journaling
- Assessment of regret v pride about your behaviour at the end of each day / interesting event
