Dan's UDEMY course has such a great discussion of the phases and transitions within the 3X model. I'm seeing it everywhere now.
I'm also becoming aware that 3X does a great job of explaining the strengths and weaknesses of certain people I know. I myself am very EXPLORE oriented, which comes from being intensely curious. Other people I know are 3X imbalanced in other ways.
One friend of mine in particular is a great study in an ACTION imbalance.
We'll call him "Brian", because that's his name, and he's a super cool guy.
Brian is strongly ACTION-oriented. This guy accomplishes more every day than most any other guy I know. He's a regular average Kiwi guy, except he’s intensely Action focused.
He taught himself piano, and he’s amazing at it (though he doesn’t realise it). He completed his Aikido black belt, and studied some other martial arts as well. My drum team Tamashii would not exist without Brian, as he built all the taiko for our team, 16 now.
The giant o-daiko drum is probably the largest performing drum in the southern hemisphere, and Brian built in secret over 6 months and then opened his garage door to reveal it to me one day.
I’ve always been mystified how he accomplishes so much but in the 3X context it’s a lot clearer now.
At a high-level, his approach to life is to live 95% in Action until things get too stressful and he’s forced to Release. I don’t think he Explores much at all.
At a low-level, e.g. within projects, he has a very balanced 3X cycle.
I'm adding a lot more Action in my own life, and made some interesting observations about Brian –

I'm adding a lot more Action in my own life, and made some interesting observations about Brian –
- He gets an idea and goes directly to Action. The minimum amount of time possible is spent in Explore.
- Brian approaches everything as a “test”, so he’s exploring as he’s doing. He has very good 3X application within his projects. He refers to everything he builds as “Mark I”, “Mark II”, etc. because he always assumes this will be one of many future designs. Like we’d say alpha, beta, etc. This means his process goes build-review-plan (engage-release-explore).
- He tends to keep his work secret until it’s done to his satisfaction. I think it’s to avoid the distraction of other people’s opinions. He wants to get each iteration complete before he’s given ideas on how the next iteration could be different. Keeps him laser-focused.
- Before studying 3X, I would have assumed that Action is tied to confidence. I.e. you need to be confident about something in order to take Action. But that's outcome-oriented thinking. I wouldn't describe Brian is the most confident guy I know, he has doubts like anyone. So his phasing into Action is very deliberate, and NOT about outcome. For him the end result seems to be the test result- getting enough practical information to level up just one step at a time.
