What’s the difference between work and play?
Why so serious? (why don't we play?)
How does being playful in social situations help us?
How can we be more playful?
- WORK = the reward comes from achieving the outcome. You’re attached to an outcome that you’re working towards, which comes with anxiety, stress, and process. E.g. going on a first date and trying to get a girl to like you so she’ll sleep with you.
- PLAY = The reward comes from doing the thing itself. You’re being present, in flow, and detached from the outcome. E.g. going on a first date and seeing how much fun you can have, or going on a first date and seeing how honest you can be
Why so serious? (why don't we play?)
- The misconception that playing is wrong, unproductive, or something only for children
- Our imagined fear of judgment from others
- We forgot how to play
How does being playful in social situations help us?
- We have more FUN, life is far more enjoyable
- We can express ourselves more freely because we're more relaxed
- People around us feel more relaxed, safe, and able to be themselves
- If we don’t achieve the original outcome, we’re still fulfilled in the moment
- A side-benefit: We’re far more likely to achieve our original outcome, and more quickly
How can we be more playful?
- Ask yourself: “What can I do to entertain myself?” in any situation you find yourself in - at work, on the street, on a date, in the line at the supermarket
- See a situation as an experiment - simply being curious and seeing a situation as an experiment to try something and see what happens. E.g. express how you feel to a stranger, guess what someone does for a living while in line at the supermarket, see what happens when you’re extremely honest on a first date.
